On Easter Monday, April 21st at 9:45 AM Rome time, Cardinal Kevin Farrell, Camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church, announced the death of Pope Francis from the Casa Santa Marta with these words: "Dearest brothers and sisters, with deep sorrow I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis. At 7:35 this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the house of the Father. His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and of His Church. He taught us to live the values of the Gospel with fidelity, courage, and universal love, especially in favor of the poorest and most marginalized. With immense gratitude for his example as a true disciple of the Lord Jesus, we commend the soul of Pope Francis to the infinite merciful love of the One and Triune God."
Pope Francis, who had been Pope for 12 years, was 88 years old.

Statement from the Parish
It is with deep sorrow that we, the Parish of St. Michael, mourn the death of our Holy Father, Pope Francis. His life was a profound witness to the love of Christ, marked by humility, compassion, and a tireless commitment to the poor and marginalized. Through his words and example, Pope Francis invited the world to embrace mercy, peace, and justice.
As we grieve his loss, pray for him, entrusting his soul to the tender mercy of God. May he rest in the eternal peace of Christ, whom he served so faithfully.
We also pray for the Church in this time of transition, that the Holy Spirit may guide the College of Cardinals in wisdom and unity as they discern the next successor to St. Peter.
May the Church continue to be a beacon of hope and truth in our world. Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace. Amen
Fr. Marc A. Vicari Pastor St. Michael Parish, Cranford
Statement from Cardinal Tobin
With profound sorrow and heartfelt gratitude, I join the Church in mourning the death of our beloved Holy Father, Pope Francis, a shepherd who walked closely with God’s people and never tired of reminding us of God’s mercy. He was a man of deep faith, profound humility, and unshakable hope — a servant whose tireless call to care for the poor and the marginalized will continue to inspire the Church for generations to come.
In this Easter season, as we proclaim that Christ is risen and death is not the end, we entrust Pope Francis to the risen Lord whom he followed so faithfully. May Christ, our hope and resurrection, welcome him into the fullness of joy and peace.
Let us give thanks for his life, his witness, and his love for the People of God. And may we honor his memory by building a Church that reflects the face of Jesus — merciful, welcoming, and always near to those on the margins.
Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin, C.Ss.R. Archbishop of Newark
